Saros

Five Pointed Tongue CD - Hungry Eye

From Aversion online: "Five Pointed Tongue" (Hungry Eye Records) is the debut full- length from Saros, one of San Francisco's new breed metal acts (featuring drummer Blood Eagle, formerly of the mighty Weakling, for those interested). A rather diverse outfit that blatantly defies specific categorization, there's a significant dose of 'traditional' metal influence to the thrashy riffing and soloing, while unique melodic twists and atypical chord phrasings shift towards a different vibe altogether (at times somewhat reminiscent of Arghoslent - strictly in terms of the music, of course). Generally snarled, distant vocals then add a blackened edge - surprisingly easing up for some excellent singing on occasion as well. Beyond that, there are also a few Schuldiner-esque flashes of technicality and time changes, with select eerie clean/acoustic breaks that segue nicely into the band's trademark aggression. Hell, there are even some totally rocked out 70’s styled dual guitar runs that come completely out of nowhere in sparse instances - all of which makes for some rather adventurous twists and turns throughout the generally lengthy compositions (the mere five tracks clock in at damn near 45 minutes). This is certainly a group to watch…"

V Halmstad CD

Shining’s fifth recorded depression is no less than a monument of beauty in blackness and ghostly shades. Silva Nigra

Epocha CD

Epocha is the fourth album of Czech Black Metal band Silva Nigra. The music has shifted into more technical, but still very catchy melodic musical passages. Each song lives its own life and doesn’t imitate any other musical element from the past. Individual songs are unique because of their Thrash Metal features and lively guitar riffs, resulting in a very compelling atmosphere. The lyrics deal with various topics and avoid usual kitschy themes. They are formed into several units that gained inspiration from philosophy, duality, decadence, own dark poetry and phantastic realism. Vocals are in the mother tongue of the band – english translations can be found in the booklet. Intro, outro and intermezzo were created by Swedish ambient-industrial project Objekt 4.

Skullflower

Orange Canyon Mind CD

The new full length from the legendary UK free/drone/psych outfit Skullflower, featuring some of the most searing, synapse scorching droneworks that Matthew Bower (the man behind Skullflower, as well as Sunroof!, Total, and The Hototogisu) has unleashed to date, in our humble opinion. Orange Canyon Mind is the follow up to 2002's awesome Exquisite Fucking Boredom (Tumult Records), and continues that albums utter mutation of stoned out riffs pulled taffy-like into eternity/oblivion and star-rupturing blasts of sonic white light. Over the 8 tracks/60 minute running time, Bower and cohorts build massive horizontal drones and melodic supernovas. Superb, beautiful, brain melting stuff.

Soihadtoshoothim

Alpha Males & Popular Girls CD - Crucial Blast Records

On their debut full length Alpha Males & Popular Girls , SOIHADTOSHOOTHIM complete their metamorphosis from purveyors of mid-90's art-damaged powerviolence to modern blastpop visionaries. Sugarcoated and venomous, these ten songs marry monstrous metallic riffing and surreal, swirling pop seizures to cyclones of gasoline-soaked noise skronk and arena-sized rock blowouts that are fronted with utter sass and ferocity, courtesy of frontwoman Libby Schaub. Alpha Males is a boldly imaginative debut, chock full of infectious hooks and crazed heaviness that references BLONDIE and indie pop, blasting powerviolence and NAPALM DEATH, pulverizing tech-metalcore, neon-hued dance punk, gleaming melodic bliss, and mutant stadium-rock anthems all in the same breath. Astounding.

Souvenir's Young America

An Ocean Without Water CD

Richmond, VA's cinematic instrumentalists SOUVENIR'S YOUNG AMERICA present their second full length. The album was recorded with John Morand (Labradford, Sparklehorse, 4 Walls Falling) at Sound of Music. "An Ocean Without Water" comes in a 6-panel digipack designed by Sasha Barr. Lush, shimmering guitar ambience and hypnotic, propulsive instrumental heaviness wind through the dusty highways and burnt twilight skies of "An Ocean Without Water," the sophomore album from Richmond's Souvenir's Young America. Divided into six flowing movements, "An Ocean Without Water" is filled with intensely beautiful melodies that drift on lonesome harmonica strains and sparkling, celestial electronics, shot through with mystic, western slide guitar, passages of crushing angular riffage, rolling tribal drumming, and transcendent blues. Through their intricate song arrangements and moody textures, Souvenir's Young America has created an epic, emotional narrative. The sound draws from the collected DNA of forebears like Popul Vuh, Earth, Labradford, and Neurosis, yet they form a powerfully evocative instrumental language all of their own. Features collaborations with Aughra (Magic Bullet Records) and Nick Forte (Sublight Records, ex Rorschach / Beautiful Skin).

Stroszek

Songs Of Remorse digi CD

Stroszek’s (Italy) "Songs of Remorse" debut album. The band's namesake (Stroszek) comes from the WERNER HERZOG film of the same name and is the perfect moniker for a band with such a gloomy atmosphere. While the band contains members of one of Italy's most respected black metal acts FROSTMOON ECLIPSE, this should be looked upon as a seperate entity and not just a side project. With carefully strummed minor key acoustic guitars, deliberate yet restrained piano lines, bursts of heaviness added for texture and deep, lush clean sung vocals that relay a sense of dread lurking beneath the surface, "songs of remorse" is perhaps at once one of the most melancholic yet accessible albums of 2007...

STROM.ec

Manual of Diagnosis CD - Neuroscan

"Listen to the sounds of torment from a lobotomized nervous system and spasms of hallucinatory madness. STROM.ec is back with a painful pure industrial experience from rhythmless, smoking, burning, nauseating ambiance's to vibrant cosmic pulsations which either unite with God or the worst nightmare of schizophrenia. Never afraid to take one progressive step further, STROM.ec has progressed from power electronics to a parapsychological frenzy of influences and alternate states of mind that border on the clinically deranged. Definitely not easy-listening music but the added depth of production and audio technology is sure to tune your subconscious to become one with STROM.ec's extreme, damned and perverted sensory suggestion. "The Manual Diagnosis" is conceived as a concept album on surgical lobotomy." Packaged in a DVD case with insert.

Sunao Inami

Delayed CD

Japanese label electr-ohm, Inami creates a work that runs from deep darkhop to vibrating ambient instrumentals. The richness of many of the pieces is overwhelming, and it's hard get across even the complexity of what happens in just one of these Inami works, much less the entire disc. Pieces ring with drama, or nostalgia through old sounds. A patchwork of faded, vintage snippets, with trumpet-like winds carressing All sorts of elements come into view. Then heavy beats come in, punctuated by mellowtron sounds, odd voices talking in the background. You can tell that Inami is very much a live performer, probably mixing laptop creations with turntables and odd, droning ambience in the background. Elements of Jazz, IDM, and heavy experimental zones. Hard to explain, excellent to listen to.

Sunao Inami

An Impulse of Acoustic CD

The computer generated instrumentation and synthesizer Japanese maestro/ guru / master sunao Inami returns with another distinguished recording. Actually returns is slightly misleading as 'An Impulse of Acoustic' was recorded and released way back in 2005. If a couple of years constitutes 'way back' nowadays. Working with his favourite NI Reaktor 4, Absynth, Ableton Live4, Waldorf synthesizers, which will mean something to someone out there, sunao explores the diversity of sound over its 68+ minutes and nine tracks. Which in turns takes the listener in a musical voyage of discovery where the skies the limit and imagination has no boundaries.Trimming the fat and keeping it lean: Starting with a small introductory ambient flecked piece, a pleasant surprise to these ears, sunao kicks into his stride from 'Urchin' onwards with his contemporary take on beat strewn and irregular rhythmically dynamic set pieces against a backdrop of cosmic translucent cut and chop sound sources that are an inspiration to behold. Each piece of music a hypnotically fluctuating and pulsing core that explodes in different directions to encompass minimal electronica, glitch, technotronica and even drone aspects. This mixing of styles is best heard on the magnum opus that is the 21+ minutes 'Denomination' track. Commencing with a sun drenched atmospheric melodic drone that swirls around and around against waves of crackling and throbbing frequencies it gradually builds and settles into the darkened recesses of sub bass rumbles and machine ambience before birthing more drones and icy black clicks. All this without a trade mark beat in sight. Of course the rhythmic passages for which he has built a formidable reputation are to be found everywhere on 'An Impulse of Acoustic', only this time around they also appear when least expected. 'Rectifier' being the prime example of this ethic. sunao continually explores and experiments with these musical improvisations creating a wonderful cornucopia of passionate resonating sounds that pulse with a blinding radiance throughout. Sunao Inami

Repeater CD

Dark analogues, electric overlays seething and revealing detailed background. Behind intelligent rhythm and pulsations, we detect evolving patterns, detailed backgrounds with this sound stopping here, this sequence a bit off-time but timed just right, an emerging tone coming up to the front, then a sudden breakdown. One gets the spot-on impression that Inami is very obsessed with details but has enough restraint to let the flow of the work inform the details rather than forcing one to be in this spot or that. So as we listen to one track streaming into another, moving through places of drone or beats or indescribable sonics, the rivers waves and currents are of differing colors and texture, one moving into another like a constantly changing train, metamorphing, one look never staying for too long, no ornament becoming the focal point before it's swept away or mutated, we feel out of control too, in some beautiful way, unprepared but awestruck by what comes next. Like riding a fast and wonderful dark Disney ride, we never know whats around the corner.

Sunao Inami

Used Up And Empty CD

The first thing that is interesting about ‘Used up and empty’ is the fact that, being recorded live, it is built as a unity. The ‘markers’, as Sunao names his tracks slip one into the other making the entire duration of the record as one long composition. On one hand, this fact is admirable. However, it does make the compositions very linear and uniform, making the attention of the listener open to wander. One must imagine how a live act of this Japanese artist is. The sounds are constructed one over the other, as a builder would use bricks. He does not look for effects or the use of velocity combinations. He does not contrast melody with beats. He does not attack the listener with noises or screeches. Basically one can either become enthralled and follow the waving of bleeps, beats and percussion or let it fall into the background. It belongs, perhaps, more in a lounge than a club, for this is not music meant for dancing. It is made for listening. (review from www.heathenharvest.com)
