Few individuals have mastered the art of soundscaping to a similar degree to the Estonian ambient artist Margus Mets, aka Sempervirens. His, largely unreleased, output of 6 full length albums and numerous other uncompiled material has been an exemplary effort to create soundworlds where boundaries are only set by the imagination of the artist, and where field recordings, deep drones, distant transmissions of some classical music broadcast, or even acoustic guitar breakdowns are found under precise multi-layering , flowing seamlessly as if they were never separate in the first place. "Dirge Of The Dying Year" uncovers eight realms filled with unfettered beauty and pure thought, eight worlds stretching out as the eight fatal directions of the compass, all engulfed under an insatiable fog. Somewhere between Biosphere's "Substrata", Northaunt's "Barren Land" and the early recordings of Brian Eno, "Dirge..." is the last and most mature recording of the Sempervirens catalogue, and a promise to far greater things in the future. Wonderful layout with each track being represented with it's own unique piece of art hand numbered and limited to 300 copies.

Ah, sweet avant-garde madness from one Juho Goatspeed, which maintains individualistic clarity of vision while completely eschewing the bedroom-BM aesthetic. Five tracks of mondo bizarro fringe-adherent quasi-black metal on offer, drawing from the usual influences. I’m kidding, of course, since there’s nothing usual in this realm of extreme metal. Still, one can point to various spots on this record and feel the spectral auras of Peccatum, Korova, pre-K Covenant, Arcturus, Ved Buens Ende and the rest of an inscrutably wacky lot circa 1997-2000. A sullen ‘80s British new wave atmosphere, Crowleyian references both explicit and tangential alike, and obscure 1970s psychedelic vibes permeate the record as well, due most likely to whatever combination of hallucinogens are at work (on Juho, not me!). It all comes together with sterling integrity and precision. This is all the more laudable given that the album was recorded in willy-nilly fashion over the time span of some three years, which could have easily rendered it somewhere between patchwork and overindulgence. With a more conventional recording schedule, a full band at work and drums with more oomph, Spiderpact will inevitably create a keeper to accompany this sleeper. - Matthew Kirshner
