Every now and again the rare occasion arises that you come across a record clearly created by fanatics that simply can't help but stand apart from the crowd. Fanatics that have deep roots in nothing else but bashing out the most grim yet beautiful sounding doom.. doom isn't the genre here, doom is the atmosphere. "Peasant" is Thou's 2nd full length after their debut LP "Tyrant" and both LPs were summoned in their hometown of Baton Rouge, LA which many here in the states consider the home state of that true soulful doom vibe somewhat akin to Motown via Detroit. Unlike many bands of the ilk, Thou doesn't just simply plow over you with riff after unbearably crushing riff over the duration of the album but choose to riff over your soul track by track with more venom per ounce than is likely healthy by any standard. "In March of 2008 Gilead Media released the debut full-length, Tyrant, by Baton Rouge, LA doom band Thou. Over the past two and a half years the band has played over 150 shows, including multiple national tours throughout the entire US. They've also managed to release a split, ep, cassette or LP (their catalog now numbering nearly 20 releases) on just about every label worth their weight in a pallet of vinyl... from Southern Lord and Robotic Empire to Halo of Flies, Vendetta and Perpetual Motion Machine, Init, among many, many more. Without a single record falling below their high standard of quality. I think this is due in part to this basic fact: Thou are a "punk rock" doom band. You knew it would eventually happen and to our surprise it's not everything you would expect from a black metal concept album based on the classic Halloween movie from 1978. Of course the disc "blasts off" with a guitar led version of the immortal theme song and also of course, from there the black metal appears. It is the almost Goblin-esque interludes as in "The Meyers House" that make this album one you'll want to come back to. Not that much of the genre specific metallized fare is pure fluff as the sometimes dissonant and tinny Tjolgtjar signature is definitely on this disc. If you're buying this disc simply based on the conceptual gimmick then you are very likely going to be a satisfied customer and also highly likely to find yourself kicking back on the sofa once again to enjoy another trip to Michael Meyers hometown. Hidden bonus track that truly is a bonus..."8 more days to halloween...halloween...halloween..Silver Shamrock!"
